What Is an Annular Tear?

An Annular Tear is a split or crack in the annulus, the tough outer ring of a spinal disc. The injury may allow the softer inner disc material to press toward the outer edge. An annular tear can occur with disc wear or sudden strain, and it may appear with back or neck symptoms.

Key Takeaways About Annular Tear

  • The tear affects a disc’s tough outer ring.
  • Symptoms may occur with or without disc herniation.
  • An annular tear is not the same as a disc bulge.

How Annular Tear Works

Annular Tear describes damage to the outer ring of a spinal disc. The annulus holds the disc’s softer center in place and helps the spine handle movement. A split can weaken that ring and may cause local pain or irritation.

Related glossary terms: Disc Bulge, Disc Desiccation, Nerve Compression.

A tear does not always mean that the inner disc has pushed through the outer ring. A Disc Bulge changes the disc’s shape, while a herniation involves inner material moving through a damaged area. Imaging reports may describe an annular tear alongside other disc findings.

How it is used in care

Clinicians consider symptoms, movement, strength, sensation, and available imaging findings together. The term helps describe the disc, but it does not explain every symptom by itself.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Decatur team

When we review a disc-related case, we connect reported symptoms and movement findings with available clinical information. We use the term to discuss care for Herniated Disc Treatment, and we avoid assuming that a tear explains every symptom.

Annular Tear in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with low back pain may have imaging that reports an annular tear near a bulging disc. During Herniated Disc Treatment, the care plan may also consider movement limits and related leg symptoms.
