What Is Atlas?

Atlas is the first cervical vertebra at the top of the spine. It supports the skull and connects the head to the neck. Unlike most vertebrae, Atlas has a ring-like shape and lacks a typical vertebral body. Its joints help the head nod, turn, and balance over the neck.

How Atlas Works

Atlas works as the upper connection between the skull and the neck. Its ring-shaped structure surrounds the upper spinal cord and supports the head. The atlas connects with the skull above and the axis below.

The atlas and axis form the upper neck joints. These joints guide small head movements, including nodding and turning. Muscles and nearby ligaments help keep the area aligned during motion. A neck assessment may consider head position, movement, tenderness, and muscle tension around this region.

Atlas refers to a bone, not a diagnosis. Neck pain can involve the atlas, nearby joints, muscles, nerves, or other parts of the cervical spine. A careful examination helps separate these possible sources.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Decatur team

When we assess the atlas during Neck Pain Treatment, we consider neck movement, head position, and the surrounding muscles. We also compare the atlas area with nearby joints and tissues. Our team uses these findings to guide care instead of treating the atlas as an isolated cause of every neck complaint.

Atlas in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with neck pain may have reduced comfort when turning the head. During an examination, we may check movement near the atlas and assess nearby muscles before choosing an appropriate care approach.
